Today as I was walking down the street, I saw something that I should have thought out of the ordinary. There right in front of me on the sidewalk was a shadow of the leaves of a tree. But wait! It looked as if the leaves were floating in midair, tied to their branch by some invisible force. No, I thought, the leaves were definitely NOT floating in space. It's just physics playing a trick on me. Since light acts like a wave, it bends around objects. So, after the light hit the branch, it started to bend around it. Then, since the little leaf stems are so thin, the light could bend around it easily and the shadow the leaves cast was almost invisible.

Light as a Wave: Floating Leaves
